Determined driver Kat Impey overcome major pre-season problems to contest her first ever race meeting in the BRSCC Formula 3 championship at the famous Brands Hatch circuit on June 12-13.
Impey, who is supported by Muc-Off motorsport cleaning products distributor SWAT Ltd, lined up on the grid after a blown engine in pre-season testing put her out of the first four rounds. The race weekend was not without its hurdles though. In the official Friday practice Impey had a clutch failure which meant she lost vital running time in the car. Impey’s team were quickly on to it and managed to get the car repaired and ready for the race on Saturday.
In the first race Impey worked her way up to 7th before being forced to retire due to a mechanical fault. The second race started smoothly but after a few laps Impey yet again had to come in to the pits due to an engine cooling issue. Fortunately the problem was quickly rectified by the team and Impey went back out, managing to work her way up to 9th position by the chequered flag.
It was a hugely eventful weekend for Impey, whose enrolment on the Motor Sports Association (MSA) Academy’s Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme marks her out as one of the UK’s most promising young drivers.
Impey said:
“It was a huge relief to finally be back out on track after a very disappointing start to the season. It has been a very tough weekend for the team and myself. It was a steep learning curve from start to finish. The F3 car is very different from my previous car. The F3 car has a massive amount of downforce, which means to get the car to handle well you must enter the corner at a much faster speed to keep it stable. This makes it extremely physical to drive. However, towards the end of the weekend I started to get to grips with the new driving technique. I’m aiming to be even further up the grid at the next two rounds at Snetterton [June 31-August 1].”
